Unity Grammar College certified Waqf CompliantView the certification

A waqf — an Islamic endowment — is one of the most enduring institutions in Islam: an asset locked in perpetuity so its benefit flows to a cause for as long as it lasts. But naming something a 'waqf' and structuring it as one under the Shari'ah are two different things, and the difference matters to everyone who relies on it.

Unity Grammar College, an educational institution in Sydney, Australia, operating a waqf-compliant structure, has been certified Waqf Compliant by the Islamic Finance Advisory.

What Waqf Compliant means here

IFA reviewed the official documentation for the project and concluded that the Unity Grammar College structure conforms with the general principles of a waqf as determined by the Shari'ah. As with every IFA certification, it remains valid subject to an annual review and on the condition that no material change is made to the project.

Why it matters

For a school held as a waqf, certification gives its community — parents, founders and donors — confidence that the endowment is genuinely built to serve in perpetuity, not simply described that way. It also offers a reference point for other institutions considering the same model. Waqf certification is less common than certifying a financial product or a charity's zakah eligibility, and this one reaches across to Australia — a sign of how far the standard now travels.

The certificate and letter can be viewed on IFA's Certification Register.
